Tottenham Hotspur have moved to sign David Villa in the transfer window – although the deal hinges on them qualifying for the Champions League.
Spurs can clinch a place in the top four of the English Premier League on the final day of the season if they beat Sunderland and Arsenal draw or lose at Newcastle.
A Champions League place would mean the London club would have a much larger budget for their summer deals.
Spurs joined Arsenal in showing interest in the 31-year-old Villa in January, but Barcelona were unwilling ot let him go midway through the season.
The Gunners interest has subsequently waned, leaving the path open for Spurs, although a drop in salary is likely to be a stumbling block for Spain’s all time top scorer.
